- Considering both the evolution of civil rights and laws and the recent nation-wide protests, this panel will examine student and community issues related to diversity and inclusivity; specifically:
- Creating a diverse student body and realizing an inclusive environment for all students;
- Institutional responses to bias incidents and hate speech inside and outside the classroom; and
- Institutional relationships with the university and local police, police reform, and community policing efforts.

- This session, following on from the first panel, will look introspectively at the important aspect of institutional mission and goals relative to diversity of faculty, staff, and curriculum, including:
- Fundamental tenets of recruiting, hiring, and retaining a diverse faculty and staff, including in the highest ranks of institutional leadership;
- Demographics of tenure and addressing disparities in the tenure pipeline; and curricular supports/changes to align with institutional commitments to diversity and inclusion.

- Contextualized in the context of race relations, participants in this group will discuss the university’s relationship with the campus police.
- Discussion of qualified immunity for campus police officers and how it plays out in university operations, including when it may be pierced by a university administrator.
- Training programs for campus police officers.
- Conflicts of interest in terms of representing campus police officers in Use of Force cases against the institution.

Race Neutral Strategies for Employment/Faculty Diversity

- Discussion of the important considerations for advising on approaches to achieve employee and faculty diversity on campus, such as:
- Training and charging search committees on diversity mission;
- Establishing pipeline programs and agreements;
- The use of diversity statements and evaluation of diversity-related activities in hiring and tenure decisions, as well as the establishment of diversity as a performance metric for leadership evaluation and compensation.

Bias-Incident Reporting and Response

- In the aftermath of Speech First v. University of Michigan and in the face of widespread protests against systemic racism, harassment of Chinese students and others of Asian descent, and racially charged political rhetoric, institutions are searching for ways to meaningfully respond to bias incidents against people of color, and also to punish incidents that rise to the level of harassment or violence.
- This discussion will address practical advice on structuring bias response policies, protocols, and bias response team training; and
- Administering bias response protocols on campus consistent with First Amendment protections, Title VI, and the myriad legal obligations that bind public and private universities.

Race-Based Scholarships, Groups, Programs

- In an effort to enhance diversity and create a welcoming and inclusive environment, college and university administrators may desire to earmark funds for race-based scholarships, support identity-based student groups, or create academic or educational programs specially designed for certain segments of the university population (i.e. STEM camps for African American women).
- Participants in this discussion group will explore creative ways to structure programs to obtain similar institutional benefits without running afoul of state or federal laws.

- Discussion of the processes for reviewing and implementing changes related to building names, monuments, and memorials including important factors and considerations such as:
- Donation instruments and donor relations;
- State and local legislation; and
- Navigating the relationship between the institution and its various constituents, including donors, students, faculty, and state legislators when considering, announcing, and implementing changes to monuments and names on campus.
